Coed Caerdydd

Trees are vital to the health of our city and our planet

Coed Caerdydd is a 10 year programme to increase the number of trees in Cardiff, supporting the city’s One Planet climate change strategy.

The project aims to:

  • Protect our current and new trees against climate impacts and diseases
  • Plant new trees in the right places for nature and communities
  • Raise awareness about the importance of trees
  • Provide opportunities for everyone to help make Cardiff a greener and healthier place to live.
  • Train and work with communities

We want to make sure that the trees we plant survive into the future so that their impact is sustained and we want to see tree planting taking place in every part of the city throughout the next decade.

Tree diseases are spreading and part of the Coed Caerdydd programme will include making sure that we plant a range of tree varieties to reduce the impact of any future losses.

We are identifying land that may be suitable for tree planting during the planting season, which runs from November to March. We will be working with landowners, volunteers, community based organisations and funders.

By working with communities to plant new trees and care for existing woodlands, we want to increase coverage across the city from 18.9% to 25%.

The pilot project will run until summer 2023.

Trees in Cardiff

Every year, Cardiff trees remove around 10.5% of all pollutants emitted by Cardiff’s traffic. This includes 7,900 tonnes of carbon which is the same as the annual emissions from 14,000 cars.

They also provide an attractive and green environment throughout our city which supports wildlife and healthier communities. Oak trees alone support 2,300 species.

The trees also take up 356 million litres of rainfall every year, this helps to reduce water treatment costs and the risk of flooding.
